Politics - Become a fan
Barack Obama led the way for politicians when he reached out to the online community through Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to win the 2008 US Election. Now UK politicians are finally catching up....
There are over 24 million Facebook users in the UK - which is almost the same number of people who voted in the last general election. Today, Facebook launches a page called Democracy UK which will provide users with information on how people are using Facebook in political campaigns.
Richard Allan, Facebook's director of European public policy and formerly a Liberal Democrat MP for Sheffield Hallam, commented: "Historically, the internet has been the dog that didn't bark in elections. But this time what we're seeing is with 24 million users on a platform like Facebook, that's as many people as voted for all the three main parties in the last election. So you've got that scale and reach that we've never had before, and so many more people online than ever before, and I think that does create the conditions for Facebook, and for the internet generally, to be a game changer."
David Cameron and Nick Clegg now have Facebook pages, but Gordon Brown has yet to make an appearance. Could this be the year when UK politicians realise the potential of social networking?
